The antagonist for my production, 'Love Me', featured on both my poster and magazine cover. The magazine cover was centred around Henry, as he was the main image of the magazine. Henry was pictured with a close up shot, featuring a direct gaze towards the audience. The strong stare that Henry gives into the lens connotes his male dominance within the film and the fear he inflicts upon his Rosey who he holds captive. By presenting the face of the antagonist, this familiarises the audience with the cast. I used a grunge texture in the background which connotes the sinister intentions of Henry’s character. Alongside the grunge background, I predominantly used red and dark coloured text to portray the evil from within the film’s narrative. The dark colour portrays the dark tone in which the narrative takes and are associated with the thriller genre.
Within my poster, three images are depicted, all giving
information of the narrative. One shows a close up of Henry, introducing the
antagonist to the audience. The second image was another close up but from a high angled
shot. This showed Rosey (Shania Conway) looking distressed as a hand is placed
upon her cheek. By using the high angled shot, this connoted vulnerability and
weakness, which is exactly how we wanted to portray Rosey. The third and final
image provided an insight to the film’s location. Depicted is the house in
which the events take place and Rosey is held captive. The poster featured a
red texture for the background, which closely resembled blood stains alongside
dark patches. The use of such a colour scheme revealed the evil and sinister
narrative of ‘Love Me’
The synergy across all three texts was the prominence of
Henry Dalrymple, the kidnapper. This is because we wanted him to be the focal
point of the film as he is the antagonist. In doing so, his role within the
film in asserted to the audience, as he is a common theme across all three
texts, unlike Rosey, Daniella and the Detective. Despite being within all three
texts, Henry’s actions and dark intentions are revealed but his motives are
withdrawn, leaving a feeling of suspense around the film’s narrative.
Throughout the texts, clothing and costumes can be viewed as
the same. This is because we wanted the poster and magazine cover to be a direct
reflection of the trailer, and this would not be achievable without the same
clothing. Within the trailer and other two texts Henry is depicted wearing a
black hoodie and coat. The use of such clothing symbolises Henry’s intentions
and dark actions which take place within ‘Love Me’.
Continuity was vital across all
three texts, as they had to interlock to give the correct impression towards
the audience of the film. One key way in which I achieved this is through the
use of the same text, which could affectively be viewed as the logo for ‘Love
Me’. I downloaded the ‘Ringbearer’
font from 1001fonts.com, and this enabled me to generate a suitable text to
feature across the three texts. I discovered the font beneath the Hollywood
category, and this was vital in providing the professional appearance I was
searching for. The font was a stereotypical thriller text, being bold and
featuring a gothic influence with the sharp edges.
Visual effects were prominent
across all three texts, and crucial in providing a well-rounded professional
project. Within the trailer, we commonly used the sepia filter to provide a
vivid but clear, this removed the raw and unprofessional look of the camera
work. Additionally, transitions were fundamental in creating a fluid trailer.
We frequently used fades to emphasise the impact of the on-screen events. In
terms of the poster, a red filter was predominantly used to conform to the
colour scheme. The use of red portrayed the malicious and twisted intentions of
the kidnapper and the sinister narrative. The magazine cover contrasted greatly
as I had to provide a sharp main image, which could not connote such evil. To
create this clear image, I duplicated the layer of the main image, before converting
the layer into an overlay. I applied the high pass filter which intensifies the
colour and sharpens the image as a whole.
In summary, I feel that all three
texts were extremely effective. This can be accounted for due to the synergy,
continuity and professional appearance throughout all. Furthermore, all can be
deemed to convey to the key conventions associated with the thriller genre. By
utilising all these areas, I feel this enabled me to successfully market our
production as the unique selling points were evident, and the use of continuity
and synergy created a brand for ‘Love Me’.
