Target Audience for Crime Thrillers

Target Audience for Crime Thrillers

The demographic for crime thrillers is not gender specific, targeting both males and females. Furthermore, the sub-genre generally targets adults over the age of 18, as the majority of films within the genre are certificated with 18 or R ratings, examples of this are Pulp Fiction, Se7en and Reservoir Dogs, which have all been deemed unsuitable for those under the age of 18. Crime Thrillers have so specific age range, but are generally targeted towards adolescence and young adults, typically younger than 40. Crime Thrillers are targeted towards nations with English as their primary language, as the biggest blockbusters within the genre are all scripted and acted in English. Therefore, the primary targets for Crime Thriller films are the United Kingdom, USA, Canada and Australia. Additionally, the majority of these films are set within these four nations, creating a relatable aspect between the characters on screen and the audience viewing the film. Crime Thrillers have the ability to attract audiences with various socio-economic statuses. For example, Crime Thrillers intrigue those of the upper class as generally this area of society is not involved with crime within their lives, and these films give an insight into the lives of the lower classes, something of which the higher class would not experience. On the other hand, Crime Thrillers can attract the lowest classes in society as this is typically the class in which many criminals are from. Therefore, this showcase of crime creates relatability between themselves, the characters and possibly the narrative. Therefore, the typical target audience for a Crime Thriller is an English speaking adult, with no specific gender or ethnicity.

The psychographics of the target audience for Crime Thriller involved a range of aspects, including interests, attitudes and opinions. The interest of the target audience will be those who are interested in crime or involved with crime themselves, this may include criminals or past offenders as well as retired or active detectives, investigators or those from the uniformed services. Frame 1 My first frame for analysis is my film poster that I created for ‘Love Me’. This conveys the typical conventions for the thriller genre; this is highlighted by the colour scheme and main image. For example, the colour scheme is predominantly dark colours, with deep tones of red and black. In my case, the images reveal the two main characters as well as the setting. This is very similar to that of Knock Knock, another thriller movie, in which the protagonist Keanu Reeves is depicted, similarly to Henry Dalrymple in ‘Love Me’. However, my poster challenges general conventions as it lacks a motto or tag for the film. For example, Knock Knock features “One Night Can Cost You Everything” The reason for this is that I did not
