Seven trailer
Seven
Flash cuts – White flashes are used to cut, to switch quickly between different shots or scenes, in particular, between the 7th and 11th seconds of the trailer. This gives the audience an insight to the narrative and the mystery surrounding it, leaving a collection of various unanswered questions. As a direct result of the quick cuts, this gives the impression that the film is action packed and of a fast pace, as well as not revealing the whole narrative of the film.
Close ups – Close ups are used on several occasions throughout the trailer of Seven. Close ups are used to emphasise the expression or emotion upon a characters face, for example, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, the two main protagonists.
Establishing shots – Establishing shots are used towards the opening of the trailer, this is to clearly define the setting of the film. From the opening shots, it is evident that Seven is set within an urbanised area, most likely a city. This is shown when Pitt and Freeman are pictured standing on the street outside a large building.
Voiceover/Narrative – Throughout the trailer, a deep masculine voiceover is used, to present the dark tone of the film, and its deep nature. Additionally, the voiceover gives insights into the narrative of which the visuals cannot. The voiceover presents the two contrasting positions of the main protagonists, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Brad Pitt is a new upcoming detective looking to move up the ranks as Morgan Freeman is looking for an end in his career, as he nears retirement.
Changes of pacing – The trailer can be clearly divided into two key halves; one is slow, featuring heavy amount of diegetic dialogue and informing the audience of the film’s narrative. The second half adopts a much quicker pace; intensify the narrative and presenting the key events and actions within the production.
Cast names and Title – The title and cast are presented by both text and the voiceover. This is a clear use of star power as Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are two critically and commercially acclaimed actors, by emphasising their involvement within the production this will draw in the audience.
